Coastal folklore songs in Dravidian tradition and medieval Christian European culture are blended in Annavi pattukal. Singers sing in keeping with rhythm using Jalar and chaplangatta. Group songs are sung under the leadership of Asan (leader). The disciple sings strictly following the stanza of the leader.
These songs are similar to Karnatic songs, which have taken shape form Dravidian songs. Annavi songs have independent and consolidated musical forms.
We can see that Annavi songs are written in the same tune, ragas and meter of Chavittunadaka songs, which have similarity of tamil songs. The research studies of Annavi songs may kindle the inner sight on historical studies of literature and reformation of languages. |
